Rheuben Allen Freedom/Power Neck Brace

*After spending a lot of time when I had a saxophone shop in Denton, Texas near North Texas State University working with my friend Dan Higgins on our book about the high notes of the saxophone. I discovered there were many keys on the saxophone that just needed help to make them easier to use mostly placement and design.

*The first is the Front F or Harmonic Key. It is very important to be able to use this key without picking up the first finger of the left hand from the B key pearl. When we are told how to play the front F we are told it is the C key with the top pearl (or key) this is not correct. The Front F is the A fingering with the top key. When you think of it like this it opens up a very different ability to go from the natural range of the saxophone to the altissimo range of the saxophone. So when I designed the Front F for my Series 8 Altos I considered several things… 1. Making it easy to operate. 2. Making it easy to operate without removing the first finger of the left hand from the B pearl. 3. Making it so when you operated the Front F you do not need to change your hand position and/or move your hand out of the palm key position. You can keep your hand over the palm D key while operating the Front F. All you do to operate the Front F is rock your first finger of the left hand and not use the entire left hand. The front F is designed to both tilt and move from left to right so you can set it where it feels best for you and the way you play.

*Next is worked on the Fork F# key. All saxophones with a pearl or many of the flat key designs for the Fork F# make you reach the third finger of the right hand back and away from the lower stack of the saxophone. This makes using this key a little more difficult and brings the right hand out of its natural position. I designed my Fork F# to be closer to the lower stack of the saxophone and to minimize the travel of the third finger from the lower stack. Easier to maintain the right hand position on the lower stack of the saxophone.

*Next the High F# key. Traditionally it is also back from the loser stack and you must come out of the right hand position to use it. This key needs to be able to be operated by both the first finger and the third fingers of the right hand. If you are operating it from the Palm Key position then you will need to use your third finger of the right hand. When you are operating the Front F key then you would need to use the first finger of the right hand to work the High F# key.
EXAMPLE: If you are playing an F# octave using the middle finger of the right hand on the top line F#, you cannot use that finger to operate the High F# key, and going to a High F# using the Front F you would need to use the first finger of the right hand.

*Next I decided to offer a choice of necks. One neck has a traditional neck brace and the other has my Freedom/Power neck brace. I believe the traditional neck brace makes it hard to control the amount of solder under the brace and it also covers up the solder seam in the neck and I believe this solder seam help the neck vibrate. So I designed the brace so it only has two very small spots were the brace is soldered to the neck. This allows the neck to vibrate better and dramatically changes the response of the saxophone. This Freedom/Power neck brace works so well it has been copied by other manufactures and put on their instruments. (One guys claims it is his brace, they say you are on the right track when other people copy what you do… I must be on to something)
